Approximately 10,000 attendees were on their feet last night for Senator Kamala Harris during Detroit’s NAACP Fight for Freedom Fund dinner, considered a crucial stop for any politician seeking higher office.
To be able to capture this crucial moment in time, and speak calmly, directly and fearlessly to “the powers that be” — Kamala moved not only the crowd, but also moved me to get out of my seat in round after round of applause. After many phone calls this morning with fellow supporters, I know I’m not the only one.
Social media is exploding with reports of last night’s event, so this will be the primary focus of today’s roundup, though Kamala continues to multi-task and those issues will also be included and offered up for discussion.
On to the event!
2020 Democratic presidential candidate and U.S. Senator from California Kamala Harris delivered the keynote address, first paying respect to a Motor City civil rights icon: the late federal Judge Damon J. Keith.
Keith passed away last month at his home in Detroit. He was 96 years old.
"He was a brilliant, Howard-educated lawyer, with an unwavering commitment to fairness and the willingness to speak truth," Sen. Harris said.
Judge Keith was one of the event's original founders.
the following excerpts are from the twitter feed of NBC reporter Vaughn Hillyard:
"Knowing that the criminal justice system is extremely broken and is in desperate need of reform, we must push for change not only from the outside, but also from the inside and at the table where the decisions are made."
"...that is what I have done from the first day I walked into that [DA office]...the [CA AG's] office, from the first day I walked into the [US] Senate as only the 2nd black woman ever to enter that chamber. And that is what I intend to do when I walk into the Oval Office."
"The United States Attorney General who lied to Congress and lied to you. And is clearly more interested in representing the President than the American People. We need leaders who have the courage to speak truth."
"I’ll pass the largest tax cut for middle class & working families in a generation. For families that make less than $100,000 a year you would receive $6,000 in a tax credit that they can access at up to $500 a month."
“Dr. King said, of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking & inhumane.” And of course he was right. Nearly 30M Americans are uninsured and that number will rise because of Donald Trump and his war to destroy Obamacare."
"Let’s say this loud and clear: Without voter suppression, Stacey Abrams would be the governor of Georgia. Andrew Gillum is the governor of Florida."
"We need a new Voting Rights Act in this country with automatic voter registration, Election Day as a national holiday, and we need to fight back against those Republicans who suppress our constitutional right to vote.
65 years since Emmett Till. 52 years since 3 young black men were killed at the Algiers Motel & 7 years since Trayvon Martin. This is still everyday life for young black people in America. Let's speak that truth that it is intolerable, and it has got to end."
"But what has this president & his Justice Department done? They stopped enforcing consent decrees. They stopped investigations into discrimination & racism in police departments. And they re-ignited the war on drugs."
“We will hold social media platforms accountable for the hate infiltrating their platforms because they have a responsibility to help fight against this threat to our democracy."
“There has been a conversation by the pundits about electability & who can speak to the Midwest. But when they say that, they usually put the Midwest in a simplistic box & a narrow narrative...too often their definition...leaves people out."
"Let’s speak truth here & today: This president isn’t trying to make America great. He’s trying to make America hate. So it is critical to our security, our dignity, & our unity as a nation when I say: We need a new president.”

Group Guidelines
The Kamala2020 community group has been created to positively support Senator Kamala Harris, and not to engage in negativity towards other community members or any other Democrats running in the 2020 primaries.
All should be made to feel welcomed here. What’s not welcomed here is petty bickering over any of our preferred candidates, or personal attacks on fellow Democrats. We’re not responsible for the actions of others who may offend, insult or attempt to sow discord and disunity — that’s on them.
What we are responsible for are our own words and actions — that’s 100% on us.
I’d like to ask all group members, as well as those dropping by who support or are interested in Kamala’s bid for the nomination, that we not respond to negativity from other campaign’s supporters with negativity. Let’s do better than our best and respond with respect, or try to hold our peace. Doing no harm costs us nothing... pie-fights will cost us everything.
Let’s be as gracious as Kamala is toward the other candidates in the race!
💙💙💙 Happy Monday, let’s be joyful! 💙💙💙
